Mother Of Murdered Sophie Lancaster Tells Of Her Sadness About Riots On The Anniversary of Her Daughter's Violent Attack

On the 11th August, 2007 young Goth, Sophie Lancaster aged 20 and her boyfriend Rob Maltby, were savagely beaten by a gang of youths in a Lancashire park, simply because they chose to dress '˜differently'. Sophie died from her injuries.

Following Sophie's death, her mother, Sylvia Lancaster set up the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, with one aim to: StampOut Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance, Everywhere, with one thing in mind - a more tolerant society.

Now, on the anniversary of Sophie's attack, Sylvia has been left reeling by the effects of the recent riots. She comments:

It was an act of mindless violence and anger that led to my daughters death and my ongoing torment over the last four years. And now, to witness this violence and destruction on a massive scale on the anniversary of my daughter's attack saddens me to the core.

We must continue to fight for a tolerant society where everybody is equal. Please, for the sake of peace and tolerance, and so my daughter didn't die in vain, stop the thoughtless hostility and think of the consequences. Anger is not the answer.
